Features & Capabilities

Sol: Sun Clock shows sunrise, sunset, golden hour, solar noon, solar midnight, and the three twilight periods for any date and location. It also highlights solstices and equinoxes, making it easy to plan activities around daylight, whether at home or while traveling. Reminders and alarms can be set for these events and automatically adjust with the seasons.

Use the built-in map or city search to pick locations, then create location-aware alarms for multiple places around the world. The app provides a daylight almanac with sun azimuth and elevation, and quick access to upcoming solar events and transitions. Note: background GPS can drain battery life, and it runs in the background only when you have location-aware alarms enabled.

User Reviews

Sol: Sun Clock is highly praised for accurate solar data, ease of use, versatile alarms, and enduring reliability. Its visual design and day planning capabilities are standout strengths. A minority of users cite update changes as a drawback, with some longing for older versions; feature requests (widgets, more solar data) exist but do not outweigh the app’s core value for photographers, outdoor enthusiasts, and circadian planning.
Pros
  • Accurate daylight data (sunrise/sunset, daylight duration) that’s essential for photography, travel planning, and circadian rhythm.
  • Easy to use, intuitive interface with clear visuals.
  • Alarms/alerts tied to solar events with offsets (sunrise, golden hour, civil twilight), helpful for scheduling.
  • Long-standing, reliable tool used by photographers and outdoors enthusiasts for years.
  • Visually engaging round graphic that communicates sun position and light phases clearly.
Cons
  • Update-related dissatisfaction in multiple reviews: some users prefer older versions and feel updates detract from usability.
Recent reviews
Favorite feature: set alarm for best time to go for a hike. Feature request: shadow of gnomon should indicate an approximate sundial effect. Recently learned: You need to swipe the area under the date to show more info. Double-tap that to start or start a newsfeed animation.

I like to be outside around sunrise and sunset every day so with its alarms you can offset to solar events it’s great.

Sol Sun Clock is an invaluable resource for my life in the Arctic. Day light changes radically from winter’s twenty one hours of darkness to summer’s twenty four hours of direct sunlight. Knowing the times of sunrise and sunset is critical for photographic interests as well as knowing what light can be expected through each day of the year. The Sol Sun Clock is the most frequently used app of all apps in my iPhone. Thank you for your support and service. AL7MI (Amateur Radio Station Call Sign)
