Features & Capabilities

PocketGrib is a portable GRIB weather viewer for the Chrome ecosystem. It lets you download, view, and analyze global weather data on the go, including wind, precipitation, pressure, temperature, waves, and more.

Overlay weather maps, watch animations, switch between meteograms and raw data, and download data with configurable options to minimize roaming. It supports NOAA GFS and multiple models (COAMPS, WW3, NOGAPS, RTOFS) and works online or offline. Note that GRIB models are specialized forecasts and may not predict hurricanes accurately.

User Reviews

PocketGrib is valued for its simple, intuitive interface and rich, boat-focused GRIB data, with fast, direct NOAA downloads that support planning. Reviewers repeatedly praise its usability, hourly wind/wave data, and reliability for long-term use. However, several users report stability problems during downloads and occasional server outages that affect data availability. When functioning, it provides clear, actionable weather info and strong planning value for sailors, especially on limited networks; its value depends on dependable data updates.
Pros
  • Easy to use with a simple, intuitive interface for complex GRIB data.
  • Comprehensive boating weather data (hourly wind, waves, forecasts) with direct NOAA GRIB access.
  • Fast loads and efficient downloads, even on slower networks.
  • Long-standing, trusted planning tool; widely used by sailors for trips and passages.
  • Direct NOAA GRIB downloads without emailing and clear presentation of surface charts and wind/wave data.
Cons
  • Occasional instability: crashes when downloading new products.
  • Reliability issues with server availability and GRIB data not consistently accessible.

This app gives so much info with a very simple display. This is the first app I check when deciding when to take the boat out. While I am on the water I make it part of my routine to check the app to see what to expect in the following hours and days. This is one of my must have apps to go sailing with.
