Features & Capabilities

LuckGrib is a fully featured GRIB reader, viewer, downloader, and weather router designed for sailors and weather enthusiasts. It enables remote access to weather data via satellite and provides advanced weather routing with rich visualization.

It supports a wide range of models (global and high-resolution) such as GFS, ECMWF, HRRR, ICON-EU and more, with isochronal routing that respects constraints. It offers two access options: a 14-day free trial or LuckGrib Lite for reduced-resolution downloads, with pricing that is a one-time charge rather than a subscription.

User Reviews

LuckGrib is praised for its wide model coverage, strong routing and departure-time features, and a no-subscription price, paired with excellent tutorials and a polished UI. It shines for sailing and offshore planning with fast downloads and deep data access. Common downsides are a learning curve, a desire for more automation, and requests for missing features (wave period/direction, cloud levels) plus concerns about future updates in a small market.
Pros
  • Extensive forecast model options (regional/global/Euro models, ensembles) with visual outputs.
  • Powerful, flexible weather routing and departure-time planning for optimal passages.
  • One-time purchase with no subscription.
  • Excellent tutorials and intuitive Apple-friendly UI.
  • Fast downloads and broad data access including ASCAT data with highly configurable outputs.
Cons
  • Steep learning curve to master the tool.
  • Less automation compared with some rivals; requires manual setup for routing.
  • Requests for additional missing features (wave period, wave direction relative to the vessel, cloud levels).
  • Some concerns about ongoing development/updates in a small market.

This app has everything that those more expensive packages have except it’s less expensive and clearly designed by a sailor

Excellent, absolutely excellent, as a retired offshore helicopter pilot and a sailor weather has a lot to do with my day to day life. With LuckGrib it shows a very pictorial weather situation. This is a super app for anyone with an interest in weather.

Our sailing program depends on several of the models in LuckGrib to help us decide if our 3 sailboats with 10 students can sail or reschedule. More thorough and accurate than the other popular weather apps.
