User Reviews

Vocacolle is praised for its Vocaloid/NicoNico catalog and niche appeal, often outperforming mainstream platforms for this content. It integrates well with NicoNico and offers a free tier with minimal ads. However, persistent language barriers (lack of English UI/language switch), monetization changes (ads and a paid subscription), branding changes from NicoBox to Vocacolle, and occasional UX/translation issues significantly impact accessibility and user satisfaction. Content quality remains strong for fans, but language, pricing, and identity are the main drawbacks.
Pros
  • Extensive Vocaloid/NicoNico catalog and niche Japanese music not easily found on other platforms.
  • Strong niche alternative to mainstream platforms for Vocaloid content, sometimes described as better than YouTube/SoundCloud.
  • Free tier available with minimal ads for free users.
  • Direct integration with Niconico for convenient access to PVs/songs.
Cons
  • No English interface or clear language switch, creating a major language barrier.
  • Ad-heavy experience and a shift to a premium subscription model, with users upset about monetization.
  • Branding/identity changes (renaming from NicoBox to Vocacolle) causing confusion and resentment.
  • Post-update UX issues and inconsistent translations, with some navigation quirks.

I’ve been using this app since 2013. The app has changed a lot since then, but the version before the revamp was the best. Now the app is ad-ridden, only in Japanese, and the app constantly bugs you to upgrade to premium. This app used to be completely FREE for years, as well as NicoVideo, now there’s a subscription model just like with YouTube. It’s a shame this app has gone downhill. How the mighty have fallen. NicoBox was always my preferred way to listen to Vocaloid music. Right now, I can’t say it is due to Nico’s greediness and inability to create a good UI. Edit: Why’d you change the name of the app?! It was fine as NicoBox for years! People used this app for more than just Vocaloid too! Now the name is generic and has nothing to do with “Vocaloid Collecting”. Is Nico going thru an identity crisis? Edit 2: I know I’m just being nitpicky now, but the new app icon looks like a modern art disasterpiece. What an ugly icon redesign. Could you at least make it distinguishable from all the other music apps on the App Store? Ugh, Nico’s identity crisis continues. UPDATE 2026: I can NO LONGER use this app because it FORCES me to update to the newest version, which I cannot install because my iOS version is too old, so I CAN NO LONGER use this app without buying a new phone. This is ridiculous, why does it require ios16? What new features in the app require it to be ios16, seriously.

I hate that there’s no English interface it’s just my first language is English and I need it to read but I know how to use a Japanese keyboard and what’s said in songs but I feel like it would be easier for there to be a English mode
