Features & Capabilities

VLC Streamer lets you watch movies and TV shows stored on your PC on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad over your home Wi‑Fi. Use the companion helper app to browse local drives and Windows shares, then stream directly to your iOS device with configurable resolutions and streaming quality.

Key features include fast setup, customizable gesture controls, live streaming after a short processing delay, and support for streaming over a local network on Windows and Mac. DRM restrictions apply; DRM-protected videos (such as iTunes content) won’t stream. Subscriptions remove ads and unlock all functions, including downloading movies to your device.

User Reviews

Users praise the app as a useful tool for streaming their own media to iOS devices, with a clean interface and fast performance on a local network. Yet intrusive advertising and a subscription-based shift that erases prior purchases mar the experience. Stability issues and bugs worsen after updates, causing crashes and unreliable playback. Internet-based streaming and cross-network use are inconsistent, and some workflows require a helper app and file conversions that degrade quality. Overall, it's valuable for home media streaming when it works, but ads, pricing changes, and reliability concerns are major drawbacks.
Pros
  • Stream and watch your own media library (including DVDs) on iPad
  • Clean interface and easy to use
  • Fast streaming with low lag on a local network
  • Paid version removes ads and adds more features
  • Access to your entire media library from a home network
Cons
  • Intrusive ads, including full-screen banners and subtitles being blocked by ads; ads persist after purchasing
  • Shift to subscription model, with prior purchases erased and poor support
  • Frequent crashes and bugs worsened by updates; reliability issues
  • Inconsistent internet/outer-network streaming; often requires being on the same Wi-Fi
  • Helper app requirement and file conversions that slow things down and degrade quality

While the automatic connection doesn’t always work, this is such a useful app for me! I’m certainly glad you made it and I hope it continues to survive. Particularly, it’s great to be able to watch my DVD’s on my iPad. I also appreciate that there was careful effort put into writing the various instructions on the site.

It immediately pops up with advertisements for the full version. Subscribing to either monthly or Annually. Closing the advertisement only results in it opening up again. What’s the point in having this version, if it requires you to get the full version?

I paid for the full version, and it just kept getting worse every update. Now it doesn’t even work. Save yourself the hassle
