Features & Capabilities

VLC Remote lets you control VLC Media Player on Mac, Windows, and Linux from your computer or mobile devices. It scans your local network, provides a full set of playback controls, volume, seek, subtitle and audio track adjustments, a playlist viewer, and a Today widget for quick access.

The app supports iPhone and iPad, offers a free version with ads and file-browsing limitations, and a paid upgrade for unlimited devices and full features. Setup is fast, and it works with VLC 2.0 and above.

User Reviews

Reviewers praise VLC Remote for its comprehensive VLC control and the convenience of using a phone as a remote. The setup is quick and it generally works well when connected. However, persistent issues include a pricey subscription model, intermittent connectivity and pauses, an aging user interface, and licensing frustrations for long-time buyers. Overall, it's a powerful tool for VLC users who can tolerate the cost and occasional reliability problems.
Pros
  • Full featured and powerful with detailed VLC controls.
  • Very convenient as a remote control, letting you manage playback without using the computer.
  • Quick and easy setup, often ready in under a minute.
  • Generally reliable and performs as advertised when connected.
Cons
  • High price with subscription model; many reviewers dislike recurring fees.
  • Unreliable connections: inconsistent pairing, frequent pauses, or needing restarts.
  • Outdated UI/UX; interface hasn’t been updated in years.
  • Old purchase licenses not recognized; forced to switch to a subscription after years of ownership.

This is just stupid. I just use the actual VLC app from video lan for free. Not a trial or demo the full VLC player app for free to use on my phone and across other devices. It's available for windowsOS for free as well. It's a great open source player and played all if not most formats. You can use it for multiple things too. Like ripping DVDs/blu-ray, burning DVDs/blu-ray. I'm even able to use it as a video capture device from VHS to digital on my PC. I just don't see the advantage of paying $20 for this when you get use the real VideoLan player for free from the actual developer.

This app works extremely well for what it is meant to do. The only thing I have against it is that it seems the UI has not been updated since 2007 when the first iPhone came out. Aside from that, it’s great!
