Features & Capabilities

Art Tools helps artists quickly design and analyze compositions. Capture a subject or choose a reference photo, select a window opening, and pick from grids including the golden ratio or no grid at all.

Fine-tune proportions, values, and colors, adjust frame and grid thickness, and use pinch gestures to resize, rotate, and reposition your image. Switch to black-and-white or color, run a value check, and save or email your project for later reference.

User Reviews

Overall, users praise Art Tools for its grid overlay and value-checking features that aid drawing transfer, proportions, and tonal planning, and for supporting plein air workflows and saving/comparing multiple compositions. However, several recurring issues dampen enthusiasm: weak onboarding and lack of clear instructions; rigid grid behavior that forces users to move the image rather than the grid; occasional stability problems and device-specific bugs; missing vertical/diagonal plumb lines; and a purchase/purchase-flow that can redirect or confuse users when upgrading. Despite these, many still find it highly useful and worth the price.
Pros
  • Grid overlay on photos helps with drawing transfer, proportions, and composition.
  • Value checker / movable value scale aids placing tonal values accurately.
  • Multiple grid options and framing choices support proportional layouts.
  • Ability to save multiple compositions and compare them in the Projects tab.
  • Widely regarded as a helpful tool for plein air painting and drawing prep.
Cons
  • Poor onboarding with few or no built-in instructions; not intuitive at first.
  • Grid handling is rigid: you must move the photo to fit the grid, rather than moving the grid itself.
  • Stability issues and bugs, including freezing when opening photos and device-specific problems (e.g., iPad mini back/white function).
  • Missing vertical/diagonal plumb lines; unclear how to create them.
  • Upgrade/purchase flow is unclear or problematic (redirects to external site or requires an update).

Would give it a 5 star rating but I confident the new app will be even better.

I was about to delete this app because I could not figure out how to make the grid denser. As another reviewer said, you have to lock the photo, then enable custom grid to be able to pinch and zoom in the grid to get more lines. I gave it a two star review because I didn’t know that feature existed. I think you guys should make that part of the little intro pages to let people understand because it is absolutely not clear. It also will not let me update to the paid version. When I go to the settings and try and upgrade, it sends me to a website. I’d like to pay you guys, but can’t figure out how!
