Features & Capabilities

Chromatic Vision Simulator is a color vision simulation tool that reproduces how people with common color vision deficiencies see the world. Developed by Kazunori Asada (Ph.D. in medical science and Ph.D. in media design) and grounded in color science, it models cone-cell mechanisms to predict color perception and can generate simulated images of protan, deuteran, and tritan vision types from your camera or photos in real time.

This educational tool supports real-time viewing, helping students, designers, and educators understand perceptual differences and create more accessible visuals by testing color choices across inputs.

User Reviews

Chromatic Vision Simulator is widely praised for real-time, camera-based colorblind simulations and a simple, no-frills interface. Reviewers value its educational use for explaining colorblindness and its usefulness for design, UX, and signage testing. Recurring concerns include realism not always matching actual color perception, and privacy/permission issues around camera and photos, with occasional crashes and save problems. Calls for clearer explanations of color-blind types and better ongoing maintenance. Overall, a powerful but imperfect tool.
Pros
  • Real-time colorblind simulation via camera, allowing users to see what colorblind individuals perceive.
  • Simple, no-frills UI with multiple colorblind type options and support for both camera and photo library input.
  • Strong educational/communication value for explaining colorblindness to others and aiding family or colleagues.
  • Valuable for design, UX, branding, and signage testing to improve accessibility.
  • Ability to compare multiple colorblind types/settings in a single view for demonstrations.
Cons
  • Realism of the simulations isn’t always perfect and may not fully match actual color perception.
  • Privacy/permissions issues around camera and photos, including reluctance or failure to grant access and related bugs.
  • Saving/export limitations and bugs (difficulty saving snapshots; no easy video export; occasional save issues).
  • Stability/maintenance concerns (perceived lack of updates and occasional crashes).
  • Usability gaps such as unclear in-app explanations of color-blind types and terminology.

I’ve been using this app for about a year now to help people understand colorblindness and it is so much easier and more effective than trying to tell people verbally what the world looks like to me. I really think the cherry on top of this app would be to add a function where we could export videos using the colorblind filters, as I have not been able to find any other application that provides that feature.

So many over-complicated colorblind simulators out there but this one outperforms them all. It’s simple and no frills, has three colorblind type variations, and the combo of camera and photo library options means I can basically test anything I need to when it comes to color accessibility. This tool is a godsend for anyone working in digital compliance!

My dad is color blind and I love being able ask him on his opinion and showing him what we see or the way we see things is absolutely fantastic!
