User Reviews

WordBook is a long‑standing, feature‑rich dictionary with integrated thesaurus, etymology, pronunciation, and helpful writing tools. It is praised for depth and reliability, and for performing well on iPad devices. Recurrent downsides include its outdated status, incomplete word coverage, occasional bugs, iPad UI issues, and occasional definition/sourcing inaccuracies. Overall, it's valued for depth and utility by writers and students, but users worry about updates and maintainability.
Pros
  • Comprehensive word tools: dictionary, thesaurus, etymology, and pronunciation in one app.
  • Reliable, long‑term utility: used for years with stable performance and useful features (e.g., bookmarking) that many users rely on.
  • Strong iPad experience: notably good on iPad Pro with scalable, readable layouts.
  • Writer-friendly and educational: appreciated by professionals for vocabulary building, spelling support, and word-related features like word of the day and bookmarking.
Cons
  • Outdated/unupdated status: several reviews note the app hasn’t been updated in years and may feel abandoned.
  • Incomplete word coverage: missing common words or terms (e.g., some lists used in spelling contexts) beyond a core dictionary.
  • Bugs and instability on some devices: reports of crashes, freezing, and buggy behavior, including audio/volume glitches.
  • iPad-specific UI issues: landscape-only functionality for full features and other layout problems (icons obscured by keypad) due to poor optimization.
  • Accuracy and sourcing concerns: some definitions are inaccurate or lack sources for certain meanings.

Find a different app even if it costs more. I wanted to be able to get definitions offline, however the definitions in this app tend to be inaccurate with the wrong connotation which results in me having to search the web to get a correct definition.

Great definitions and I really enjoy that you can recursively click any word and hop into it’s own word definition. I do wish the root origins of a word were more elaborate though.
