User Reviews

Real Kana is widely praised for its effective, focused kana-learning experience with a clean, customizable interface and flexible training modes, making it a strong on-the-go study tool rivaling the website. However, persistent issues drag down the experience: lack of landscape/iPad support, stability crashes on newer iOS, a keyboard-visibility bug, weak onboarding, and mixed feedback on audio pronunciation.
Pros
  • Effective, focused tool for learning kana (hiragana/katakana) with a clean, customizable UI.
  • Highly flexible practice options: fonts, sets, test modes for varied drills.
  • Great for on-the-go study and for quick daily practice; helpful for reading and memorization.
  • Audio pronunciation available for kana (as noted by some users), aiding retention.
  • Preferred over the website for kana study; practical and reliable learning asset.
Cons
  • No landscape view / iPad landscape support (portrait-only limitation).
  • Stability issues on newer iOS versions (crashes on iOS 18).
  • Keyboard sometimes disappears after switching apps or unlocking the device.
  • Weak onboarding/help/documentation and a UI flow that can be confusing for new users.
  • Mixed/unclear feedback on audio pronunciation (some praise audio, others note its absence or mismatch).

Great for learning the kana. App version of the website realkana.com. Most other kana apps don’t have the extended katakana like this one does, so I bought it to practice the extended katakana. I already know the kana but I always struggle when I read a word with any of the extended katakana forms like ウィ or フェ which don’t have a hiragana equivalent. Unfortunately the app doesn’t have word typing practice like the website does. I’ve already been using the website so I don’t mind supporting the devs and I don’t expect them to implement this as the last big update was a decade ago, but it would be nice to have!

Found this via a website and I absolutely love it. But the app on my iPad wont rotate to landscape mode. Please for the love of god update this

constant crashes on iOS18 when trying to move on to the next character. Pretty useless for learning anything with it crashing every 4-5 characters
