For every tornado outbreak this year in the US, there have been corresponding reports in TornadoSpy. You can verify this by using the history feature in the app. There is also NOT a subscription fee, and the app currently has a large enough user base such that it has provided alerts up to 30 minutes before the standard NOAA sightings are issued. Also, the Missouri tornado mentioned in the comments was published (picture and all) well before the NOAA sighting.

User Reviews

Tornado Spy is praised for timely alerts, accurate locations, and effective mapping and perimeters, helpful for staying safe and tracking storms across regions. Users also value notifications and responsive support. However, recurring issues include stability problems (crashes/white screens), outdated updates, a cluttered UI, non-working radio features, and a reliance on official sightings with few user reports. Overall, it’s useful but needs stability, UI improvements, and more reliable data sources.
Pros
  • Timely and accurate tornado alerts and location data, with reliable notices from both NOAA and user sightings.
  • Useful mapping and perimeter controls that allow you to set a warning area and search around your location.
  • Helpful for travel and staying informed across different regions, not just at home.
  • Useful tornado and hail notifications, aiding safety during severe weather.
  • Positive developer support and value from Tornado Spy + (upgrade) option, with quick feature additions in response to user requests.
Cons
  • Stability issues including crashes and white screen on startup; not working consistently across devices.
  • Outdated apps: lack of updates for newer iOS versions and long gaps between updates.
  • Clunky UI with map view obstructed by buttons, making it hard to use the app smoothly.
  • Radio feature frequently not working, leading some users to avoid using it.
  • Scarce user-submitted sightings and heavy reliance on official NWS data, reducing perceived community value.
