Features & Capabilities

the Clave is a dedicated clave pattern metronome and click-track app for Chrome. It features five selectable patterns—Son, Rumba, two Afro (6/8) styles, and Bossa Nova—with on-screen traditional notation that highlights each beat as it plays.

Tempo ranges from 40 to 200 BPM with rock-solid accuracy (nearest sample, about 22 microseconds). Drag to adjust tempo, tap tempo to set a rhythm, and switch between forward (3:2) and reverse (2:3) clave. Playback runs in the background, and you can customize sound with different pitches and a volume boost, making it a versatile practice aid for Latin music or to inject new flavor into other styles.

User Reviews

Users praise The Clave for its simple, intuitive interface and strong practice tool. They value the ability to switch between 2/3 and 3/2 claves, view notation while playing, and use it as a timekeeper, with additional rhythms like Bossa Nova and Afro-Cuban patterns. Recurrent downsides are battery drain and occasional crashes, plus frequent requests for more rhythms (6/8, Afrobeat, 2:3 Son Clave) and improved tempo input. Overall, it's a free, ad-free, highly usable practice companion that would benefit from stability and feature updates.
Pros
  • Easy to use / simple minimalist interface
  • Effective practice tool that helps improve technique and is great for warm-ups
  • Flexible clave options: switch between 2/3 and 3/2, multiple patterns, and notation display; useful as a timekeeper
  • Free to use and ad-free
  • Includes Afro-Cuban rhythms and Bossa Nova patterns; good variety
Cons
  • Battery drain / high power usage with background activity
  • Occasional crashes on open / reliability issues
  • Requests for more rhythm patterns and rhythms (6/8 variations, Afrobeat clave, 2:3 Son Clave) and related features like a downbeat tone
  • Tempo control could be improved (typing tempo instead of just a slider)

Overall I really love the app and I have noticed my time improving so much as a horn player. That being said, I think there is some “quality of life” type of easy improvements that could be made. Most notably the way that you select tempos with only the slider is kind of annoying. If there was a way to just type the tempo that would make the app so much better for little effort. I use this app along with pro metronome and that app is much better quality of life, if only I could smoosh them into one app!

A fun app which disappears after a few months. Just reload and you’ll be fine.
