Review summary

SoundGrid provides strong value, an intuitive live-focused grid sequencer, and solid import/export and instrument options. It’s an attractive, affordable option for live play and idea capture. However, reviews cluster on stability issues (crashes/freeze), touch-target problems, and limits like only 8 patterns and limited sound variety, plus gaps in grid management, MIDI support, and external display. If the developers address stability and control refinements, it has potential as a reliable, budget-friendly grid tool for live performance and composition.
Pros
  • Affordable price with strong value compared to similar grid sequencers.
  • Intuitive, live-performance–friendly UI.
  • Import/export options and easy sharing/importing of songs and sounds.
  • Wide range of instruments with the option to create or upload your own.
  • Engaging grid-based sequencer that delivers immediate musical results.
Cons
  • Stability issues including crashes and freezes on various devices (e.g., iPhone 6 Plus).
  • Touch controls are prone to mis-taps: tiles are too small and hard to select; zoom or better targeting is needed.
  • Pattern/grid limitations: only 8 patterns/boxes, limiting longer pieces.
  • Sound quality concerns: samples can sound cheap with static when using headphones and limited sound variety.
  • Workflow gaps: grid management is cumbersome (difficulty deleting old grids), and there are missing features such as MIDI support and external display options.

2021-12-17 Xm***** I’m an avid Tenori-On user. The fact that in SoundGrid each instrument needs to have its own scale chosen independently is pretty much an annoyance that breaks the app for me :/

2021-08-11 da***** Not sure if the button for patterns is working. Like I click it and nothing happens. So I am stuck being able to only play the first pattern and it will not continue playing onto the 2nd one.

For instance, the ability to set loop ranges for each pattern means being able to play a 7 note sequence on top of 12 if so desired. There is a nice selection of instruments available, but of course I want more. (Note to developer: how does one access the web interface mentioned in the description, in order to create instruments?) Another example: adjustable feedback and timing of the delay effect, either in milliseconds or in multiples of a 32nd note ... and fractional multiples if you want. 😎 Very glad to have found this gem.
