Features & Capabilities

QuakeWatch is a long-standing, feature-rich Chrome extension that provides the latest magnitude 1.0+ earthquakes from trusted sources (USGS, EMSC) via an interactive world map. Pan and zoom the map, sort results by recency, largest earthquakes, or distance, filter by magnitude, view quake details, and see nearby events on a live map.

It also shows tsunami information, lets you share earthquake data via email, Twitter, Facebook, or SMS, shows times in your local time zone, and operates without ads across iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. QuakeWatch has been used by schools, relief agencies, and media worldwide for over a decade, offering a reliable, ad-free reference for current seismic activity.

User Reviews

QuakeWatch is valued for real-time seismic data, detailed maps, and ease of use, with a long track record. However, multiple reviews flag maintenance concerns (no updates or developer contact), data gaps/accuracy problems (missing regions, aftershocks), and notification/UI quirks. Users worry about future updates and data completeness, even as the core information remains useful.
Pros
  • Real-time, up-to-the-minute seismic information with quick location and magnitude details
  • Comprehensive data with detailed maps and useful sorting options
  • Easy-to-use, clean layout and customizable features
  • Long-standing trusted app with years of use and reliable core functionality
  • Data sourced from multiple seismic networks, not just a single source
Cons
  • App appears unmaintained/orphaned with few or no updates and unclear developer contact
  • Data gaps and accuracy issues (missing towns/regions, Hawaii quakes not shown, aftershocks not consistently reported)
  • Notifications/alerts are lacking or unreliable and notification settings are incomplete
  • UI/navigation quirks such as redundant Closest vs Nearest tabs and degraded zoom/pixel clarity
  • Uncertainty about future updates due to maintenance and contact issues (404 contact link)

Used the app for years and love it. No updates for a long time but it still worked for years. Now parts are breaking. Very disappointing.

Excellent comprehensive and detailed info; great maps, ways of sorting info. Been using it for over 10 years!

It seems this is now an orphaned app. No updates, no developer contact. The app still works but I'm not sure how reliable the information is. I will have to find another one. Please come back Developer! I have loved Quakewatch for many years!
