User Reviews

Katana Librarian shines for mobile patch editing and direct library saving, with an intuitive UI and strong live workflow, often outperforming Boss Tone Studio. However, stability issues, hardware-connectivity hurdles, and device-feature gaps, plus concerns about value, temper its appeal. It’s a promising tool for Katana users that needs fixes and broader hardware support.
Pros
  • Laptop-free patch editing on iPad/iPhone (edit patches without carrying a laptop).
  • Saves edits directly to the patch library, not just to amp channels (unlike Tone Studio).
  • Intuitive, streamlined UI and strong patch-management concept.
  • Excellent for live/gig use, enabling patch editing/control from across the room.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and hangs when editing; stability is a major issue.
  • Connectivity problems with hardware (e.g., CME Widi uhost) and reliance on external adapters (Bluetooth) to work.
  • Incompatibility with older devices (e.g., iPhone 8 and earlier) and missing features on those devices.
  • Feature gaps and bugs (can't change a patch within a group; patch organization could be improved; no bass Katana support yet).
  • Perceived high price given current instability and limitations.

I just got this thinking I wouldn’t have to lug around a laptop for changing my patches but soon discovered it constantly hangs and has to be restarted at least if you are doing imports and exports like me. I’m on a new iPad BTW connecting to a MKII 100. It sure would be nice if it only worked!!

The concept behind Katana Librarian is excellent – a streamlined, intuitive way to manage Boss Katana patches without relying on Boss Tone Studio. Unfortunately, the execution leaves a lot to be desired. I’m using a Boss Katana Gen 3 50W and an iPhone 15 Pro Max, so hardware is definitely not the issue. Yet the app is highly unstable, crashing almost every time I try to make any edit. This makes it incredibly frustrating and unreliable, especially when quick adjustments are needed. Considering the app costs $14.99, you’d expect a far more polished and stable product. As it stands, it feels more like an unstable beta than a finished app. With some serious updates and bug fixes, this could be a fantastic tool for Katana users – but right now, it’s hard to recommend.
