Features & Capabilities

BTS for KATANA Gen 3 connects your BOSS KATANA Gen 3 to an iPhone or iPad over Bluetooth to edit amps and effects using Tone Edit, and to organize sounds with Tone Librarian.

It also provides integrated access to the Boss Tone Exchange, letting you share your original Livesets and download others' tones from around the world. Note: An active internet connection is required for Tone Exchange, and pairing requires KATANA Gen 3 (Version 1.06 or later) and the BT-DUAL adaptor. The app guides you through Bluetooth setup after launch.

User Reviews

Overall, the BTS app can dramatically enhance Katana Gen 3 tone design via deep editing, extra FX, and Tone Exchange, especially when the Bluetooth link is stable. Users praise easy pairing and intuitive controls in some setups and describe a powerful, flexible workflow that beats PC-based editing. However, widespread usability frustrations persist: a dated, non-intuitive UI; missing landscape mode for iPad; unreliable Bluetooth connectivity and save/backups; occasional library loss and sign-out issues; and concerns about paying for the Bluetooth dongle. It can be excellent when it works, but usability problems limit adoption.
Pros
  • Rich tone editing with extra FX and parameters, enabling deeper, more customizable tones.
  • Wireless Bluetooth module integration adds value and is worth it when the module connects reliably.
  • Deep editing of Katana patches and easier usability compared to PC workflow.
  • Tone Exchange integration allows downloading/sharing presets, enhancing the app's usefulness.
  • Multiple control methods (swipe, typing, tapping) and generally intuitive editing when the UI cooperates.
Cons
  • No landscape mode on iPad, hindering tablet use and larger screens.
  • UI/UX is outdated, non-intuitive, and often clunky with inconsistent presentation.
  • Unreliable Bluetooth connectivity/pairing; frequent disconnects and slow connections.
  • Unstable data saving/cloud syncing (libraries disappearing, random sign-ins, save option not reliable).
  • Bluetooth dongle cost/need feels overpriced given the app’s usability issues.

The app works as advertised. I’ve have no issues connecting to my iPhone or iPad. Adding landscape mode for the iPad would make it more user friendly to keep app open while using the amp.
