Features & Capabilities

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Do NOT enable the Safari extension on all websites. That will block all JavaScript on all websites.

Please consult the instructions or contact support.

StopTheScript is a Safari extension for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS that stops all JavaScript on your selected websites. StopTheScript is the only Safari extension that stops inline JavaScript on the web page as well as externally loaded JavaScript. This is in contrast to Safari content blockers, which can only block external JavaScript, not inline JavaScript.

StopTheScript is made by indie developer Jeff Johnson. If you need support, please email me at stopthescript@underpassapp.com or read the support site at https://underpassapp.com/StopTheScript/support.html

User Reviews

Users praise StopTheScript for effective script blocking and security, with notes on its simple, NoScript-like value and improved browsing stability. However, recurring criticisms involve the lack of granular controls (no whitelist, per-site rules), all-or-nothing blocking that hurts usability, and occasional reliability or device-specific issues, plus unclear toggling off. Overall, it offers strong security benefits but significant usability and feature gaps.
Pros
  • It works as advertised and reliably blocks scripts when enabled.
  • Simple, no-nonsense interface that emphasizes security.
  • NoScript-like protection that some users compare to the PC experience, adding value on iOS Safari.
  • Improves browsing stability by reducing script-related errors and crashes.
  • Strong overall recommendation from users who value proactive script blocking.
Cons
  • Lack of per-site whitelisting and granular controls; all-or-nothing blocking.
  • Usability issues and practicality struggles for daily use; cumbersome at times.
  • Occasional non-functionality or bugs on certain devices (e.g., iPadOS) and unclear toggle-off behavior.
  • Does not block cookies effectively and lacks finer rule editing/import/export options.
  • No straightforward way to edit rules or import external ones within the app.

I’m questioning the negative reviewers. It’s a fantastic app. IYKYK. Does exactly what you need it to do. Tested on a few articles and it works perfectly. Thank you!

It’s functional, but virtually useless in the day to day. While I realize it is not encouraged to just block everything by default due to usability, concerns Blocking JavaScript by default is a measure that those who care about security and also has the perk of making your phone more intentional. I think it would be better to have forms of manually whitelisting. Instead of actively discouraging blocking. Great if you’re trying to read and bypassing paywalls but besides that very forgettable extension

Ok, my fault. I actually couldn’t believe that anyone would write such a stupid extension, so I assumed that the author worded the description poorly. Joke’s on me. 1. Why would there be no ability to whitelist certain websites? — this is different from enabling the <noscript> tags. Enabling noscript tags still breaks minor sites like Google.com. 2. Why would the choice be all or nothing JavaScript. Why not work like NoScript on every other platform and give a choice of scripts to run vs. block, and allow some to be global and some only for the given website. As designed and implemented, it works, but is useless. As it is currently configured, it is worth about 50 cents. Write a shortcut that turns JavaScript on and off in settings and it would be equally useful. Avoid this until it’s updated to have relevance.
