Features & Capabilities

SkySafari 7 Plus is a comprehensive space simulator and telescope control app designed for amateur astronomers. It combines a vast celestial database with immersive real-time sky simulations, allowing you to explore comets, stars, constellations, and planets up to 10,000 years in the past or future. The built‑in Events Finder highlights visible moon phases, eclipses, meteor showers, and notable planetary phenomena tonight and far into the future.

Version 7 adds ASCOM Alpaca and INDI telescope support, real-time OneSky observations, SkyCast sharing, Sky Tonight planning, and improved notifications and observation tools. It also introduces Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets and makes previously paid features like the H‑R diagram and 3D Galaxy view free.

User Reviews

SkySafari 7 Plus is praised for telescope control, sky navigation, and educational object data, plus a cleaner UI. However, reviewers repeatedly flag pricing/paywall concerns, crashes, telescope connectivity problems, limited access to some content (like comets) without upgrades, and occasionally poor support. Overall, it offers powerful features for observers but reliability and pricing frustration hinder consistent use.
Pros
  • Telescope control and aiming features (including eyepiece previews).
  • Robust sky navigation and object finding capabilities.
  • Educational, object information that aids learning.
  • Cleaner, more intuitive UI and user experience compared to similar apps (e.g., Stellarium).
Cons
  • Frequent upgrade prompts and pricing/paywall approach, with major features moved behind paywalls.
  • Crashes and instability, including Tonight button and occasional startup crashes.
  • Telescope connectivity and network issues preventing scope control.
  • Content accessibility limitations, such as comets or certain objects requiring additional payments or being hard to find.
  • Variable or poor customer support.

Don’t bother supporting newer versions if they are going to leave older PAID versions behind in a non usable state.

This app will show you where and when to find most anything astronomical in the sky. With numerous controls and settings, you can configure your screen to help you meet your observing goals. It take a little figuring with the settings to get it setup , but it’s worth the effort. I’ve used it on my iPad and phone. And used it to help aim my telescope. The extensive object (planet, star system, globular cluster, nebula, galaxy, etc.) information is educational.

Version 8 is now Pro only for iOS for $50 (not Mac of course), so I guess they aren't interested in casual users by not offering a Plus version. I won't be upgrading. I own many previous versions, including the abandoned Mac version 6. Too bad they don't care about these other markets.
