User Reviews

iTAK on iOS is praised for its clean UI, strong visuals, and core TAK functions when on a server, and it’s free to use. However, it struggles with stability (crashes during data/package operations and overlays) and lacks ATAK parity, especially in mesh support and data-package interoperability. Additional concerns include a GUI that doesn’t mirror ATAK and problematic offline maps handling. These interoperability gaps and reliability issues are the most repeatedly mentioned drawbacks affecting field use.
Pros
  • Easy to use and smooth iOS-like interface.
  • Core TAK features work when connected to a server.
  • High-quality graphics, displays, and overlays.
  • Free to use (accessible without a purchase).
Cons
  • Lacks parity with ATAK, including no cross-compatibility for data packages and limited ATAK tools.
  • Frequent crashes and instability (e.g., during data package export/import and overlay usage).
  • Mesh/mesh-network support is missing (Meshtastic/LORA plugins and device integrations).
  • GUI/UX not aligned with ATAK and inconsistent look-and-feel.
  • Offline maps and map handling issues (uploading, MBTile formats, size limits).

Imagine Apple taking a working product and making it their own less capable less intuitive design, that’s iTAK. Every time I come back to iTAK I am always disappointed. Yes they have made minimal updates but when compared to ATAK it’s completely obsolete. You can’t share data packages between the two and there are a plethora of tools available for ATAK for your specific applications. If you really need ATAK then you really need an Android, otherwise you’re wasting your time.

This app has the smoothness and simplicity of an iOS app, but greatly lacks the feature richness of ATAK. It’s a trade-off that isn’t well communicated in the app description. Not sure who is funding this effort, but it certainly feels intentional.

Why can’t it be more like the ATAK version utilized on Android devices. If it was the same but on iPhone, I would pay for it.
