Cryptomator: Protect Privacy

Open Source Cloud Encryption

Features & Capabilities

Cryptomator: Protect Privacy is an open-source cloud encryption tool that puts data security in your hands. Create vaults, protect them with a password, and access them across your cloud storage. Vaults unlock with biometric readers (Face ID / Touch ID) and integrate with the Files app for a seamless experience.

Security is built in: file contents and filenames are encrypted with AES-256, and passwords are protected with scrypt. It supports major cloud storages (iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, WebDAV, S3) and can work with other File Providers. The project is open source and community-driven; it even earned the CeBIT Innovation Award for Usable Security and Privacy.

User Reviews

Users applaud Cryptomator for strong encryption and privacy, a one-time purchase model, easy onboarding, offline access, and convenient saving to encrypted folders. Common downsides include a Files app integration flaw that reveals content when locked, post-update bugs and vault access issues, lack of 2FA, pricing confusion or overcharges, and an unpopular new app icon/UI.
Pros
  • Robust encryption (AES-256) with strict privacy (no tracking/telemetry)
  • One-time purchase / no subscription
  • Easy onboarding and vault creation
  • Offline access with flexible cloud sync
  • Convenient direct save to encrypted folders
Cons
  • Security flaw in Files app integration: thumbnails/filenames visible when vault is locked, risking exposure
  • Bugs and reliability issues after updates; some vaults become inaccessible
  • Missing two-factor authentication (2FA) support
  • Pricing/licensing frustrations (overcharges, double charges, lifetime vs subscription)
  • Unpopular UI/icon redesign and related UX/UI concerns

$30 for a license is expensive but then, there’s no alternative. What makes me look for alternatives is not having a simple search function. Since the concern is leaking metadata in the Files app, Cryptomator app itself should add a search function.

This works for the Files app but not for the Preview app. You’ll be prompted for credentials for one but can view files without in the other and as a result does not meet my needs at this moment.

I absolutely love Cryptomator. It’s a really great tool to easily encrypt files before they go to the cloud. That said, I really dislike the new icon. The old one was much more simplistic, which was far more visually appealing and consistent with the design themes on iOS.
