Features & Capabilities

The Blue Bikes Nola app is the official gateway to New Orleans' bike-share system. It lets you unlock, ride, and pay directly from your phone for pedal‑assist e-bikes. A greener, healthier way to move around the city, whether commuting, meeting friends, or exploring.

The map highlights service neighborhoods—French Quarter, Tremé, CBD, Lower Garden District, Central City, Marigny, Bywater, Mid-City, and Bayou St. John—making it easy to plan trips. Sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, the program integrates with the existing transit network for a seamless experience.

User Reviews

User reviews show a mixed picture: many enjoy the idea of riding Blue Bikes to see neighborhoods and as a family-friendly activity, with some reporting easy initial access. However, frequent issues dominate: high and opaque pricing with extra charges, unreliable app performance and poor map/navigation, limited service area and bike availability, and insufficient customer support. Bike maintenance concerns also surface. Overall usefulness depends on reliability, clearer pricing, and better bike availability. Improvements in navigation, service-hub clarity, and faster customer service could significantly boost satisfaction.
Pros
  • A fun way to explore the city by bike, which many users enjoy.
  • When it works, initial access to bikes and the app can be easy and straightforward.
  • Electric bikes offer a fast and exciting way to get around.
  • Long-time users still see value in Blue Bikes as a convenient urban mobility option.
Cons
  • Expensive and opaque pricing with extra charges (such as end-of-ride and out-of-hub fees) is repeatedly cited.
  • Frequent app glitches and reliability problems (couldn’t unlock, crashes, end-ride errors, inaccurate maps).
  • Limited service area and bike availability; maps often show bikes that aren’t there or are hard to find.
  • Poor customer service and slow or generic responses to issues.
  • Bike quality and maintenance concerns (dead bikes, hard tires, brakes) impacting rides.

I travel with a cellular-enabled iPad, not an iPhone. The app downloaded, installed, and opened fine. It let me buy a monthly subscription and unlock a bike. But at the end of the ride Blue Bikes requires a photo, and each time I tried the app would kick me out. (Yes, I’d given it access to the camera.) So after each ride I’d have to contact support to have them end the ride. That usually worked, although sometimes they were slow about it. If the app doesn’t work with iPads they should say so up-front, and not let us purchase subscriptions that way.
