User Reviews

Users frequently praise Ente Photos for strong privacy (end-to-end encryption), a free 10 GB storage tier, and solid backup/organization features. Recurrent drawbacks include stability and performance issues during searches and backups, limited advanced search options, and higher pricing relative to competitors. The app seems best for privacy-minded users willing to tolerate reliability bumps while hoping for improvements in search flexibility and performance.
Pros
  • Privacy-focused with end-to-end encryption and a privacy-respecting approach that isn’t tied to Google/Amazon/Apple.
  • 10 GB of free, end-to-end encrypted storage offering solid value for new users.
  • Robust backup, organization, and search features (including tagging, duplicates detection, memory/map/face-recognition utilities) that enhance photo management.
  • Open-source/open privacy-conscious design as highlighted by users.
Cons
  • Stability issues: iOS app crashes when searching or selecting photos and can close unexpectedly.
  • Performance issues during backups/uploads: slow processing for videos and reliability concerns during large uploads.
  • Limited search and sorting capabilities: no date-based sorting in People and difficulties combining person with year or subject in searches.
  • Pricing: perceived as expensive compared with mainstream photo storage services.

I’ve been trying to get away from Google Photos and OneDrive and attempted Proton Drive. I found the user interface unintuitive and extremely difficult to use. Ente has the same end-to-end encryption and quality of life features like being able to just use it like a photo app. It backs up when the phone is locked and the ability to search can’t be overstated. Being able to share photos with friends and family is an amazing feature that I thought wouldn’t be possible with encryption. I will be recommending this service to anyone.

This app craves everything you have and annoys you into submitting to full photo access and machine learning. Let me pick what I want to share, when I want, and stop forcing users to grant permissions through progressive screens you can’t get past without submitting.

Just switched over from Amazon Photos this week, paid up for a year. The subreddit is helpful for figuring out more of how it works.
