Features & Capabilities

Instant Guard is a VPN feature based on ASUS routers, currently available for managers only. Use the Instant Guard app on public Wi‑Fi or away from home to keep your personal privacy safe and financial information protected, with a VPN connection that keeps you anonymous while you browse.

Key features include One-Click Operation, secured and encrypted connectivity, anonymous browsing, and the ability to change your IP address and location. Note: ASUS routers sold in the CN region do not support Instant Guard. The app supports a broad range of ASUS models (RT‑AX, RT‑AC, ZenWiFi, GT/TUF series). In the future, sharing VPN permissions with family or friends is planned.

User Reviews

Users praise ASUS router integration and the VPN value-add for remote access, but report widespread reliability issues, iOS compatibility problems, limited debugging options, and missing sharing features. Some routers even crash or disrupt connectivity. Overall, Instant Guard offers a strong concept with notable router-based VPN benefits but suffers from stability and troubleshooting gaps across devices and networks.
Pros
  • Easy setup and strong ASUS router integration (baked-in).
  • Provides a free, secure VPN to the home network enabling remote access to devices like a NAS.
  • Simple, clean interface and straightforward connection flow.
Cons
  • Frequent connectivity issues and unreliable VPN connections across many reviews.
  • OS/device compatibility problems on iOS 16.x and iPad, including cellular vs Wi‑Fi failures.
  • Lack of robust logging/diagnostics and limited configuration options.
  • Missing or non-functional sharing feature for secure connections.
  • Router instability or outages (crashes/killing internet) on some router models when using Instant Guard.

When activated my cellular data was severely affected. The cellular connection . The phone kept showing full bars and calls could be made. It even said 5G but there was no internet. I troubleshooted with the phone company and they could not resolve it. I planned on taking the phone to Apple but decided to do a full reset first. After the reset, the issue persisted so I then checked the VPN settings. I found Instaguard’s VPN intermittently trying to connect. I decided to turn it completely off and to remove it and my internet worked again. I think that if I want to remotely manage my network, I’ll stick to port forwarding.

To setup you must do this IN THE CORRECT ORDER 1 - enable Instant Guard on the router and remote access. 2 - Then you install Instant Guard on the MACOS (select setup as Guest) 3 - Send your MacOs an invite to instant guard (I used my iPhone instant guard app (click Share, and then airdrop the invite) 4 - The invite will launch the Instant Guard on MacOS, and then a password field pops up (the app added it to your clipboard, just Command+V) 5 - Go to Settings -> VPN -> Instant Guard on your Mac’s settings and add that password to your configuration so it’s never prompted for again (This is a manual step)
