Features & Capabilities

Chess Sudoku, presented by Cracking The Cryptic, pairs chess and Sudoku in three twists: Knight Sudoku, King Sudoku, and Queen Sudoku. Each variant uses standard Sudoku rules with additional chess-move constraints—Knight Sudoku forbids the same digit a knight’s move away, King Sudoku restricts diagonal movements, and Queen Sudoku prevents any 9 from sharing a row, column, box, or diagonal with another 9. Puzzles are crafted by Simon Anthony and Mark Goodliffe and play-tested to be engaging and solvable. Players start with zero stars and earn stars by solving puzzles, unlocking more content as they progress.

August update adds 15 new King puzzles, bringing the total to 100 puzzles across all variants. The game is designed to challenge logic and improve solving skills, offering a satisfying blend of mind games for fans of Cracking The Cryptic.

User Reviews

Chess Sudoku blends chess constraints with Sudoku to deliver fresh, puzzle-rich gameplay. Reviewers praise the three variants (queen, knight, king) for adding depth, the robust solving interface with color-coded notes and multiple-cell selection, and the overall design and value for money. The app is seen as high-quality and addictive, with a supportive community and helpful hints. However, recurring criticisms include inconsistencies in applying queen rules in some puzzles, small number buttons and a non-intuitive notation/entry system, and a fiddly UI for color highlighting.
Pros
  • Chess-based constraints (queen, knight, king) introduce fresh patterns and deeper logic to Sudoku.
  • Strong solving interface with color-coded notes, multiple-cell selection, and flexible notation.
  • Wide variety of puzzles with progressive difficulty across variants; hours of engaging content.
  • High-quality design and value; supportive community and helpful hints; complements Cracking the Cryptic videos.
Cons
  • Queen-rule inconsistencies/errors in some puzzles, including contradictions or rules not being followed.
  • Small number keypad/buttons; not beginner-friendly entry and hard to hit on phones.
  • Notation/entry system not beginner-friendly or clearly explained; learning curve can be steep.
  • UI for color highlighting toggles is fiddly and hard to use.
  • Some puzzles reportedly have multiple solutions or contradictions (e.g., certain queen/knight puzzles).

I am a chess player so I expected chess soduku to make sense. Queen move ones though clearly have some additional rule. It says no duplicates on the diagonals, but it’s only some diagonals and not the others. For instance in puzzle 2, the 1s x out all the spots in row 5. In puzzle 1, it starts with two fours across the long upper left to lower right diagonal. Huh?!

I love this app!! The chess move limitations add such interesting new patterns and techniques. However, I’ve finished all the knight move puzzles multiple times and am getting bored of them! I’d love to see another update with more puzzles.
