Sandwich Sudoku blends Sudoku with a twist: outside numbers indicate the sum of the digits sandwiched between the 1 and 9 in each row or column. Solve using logic and basic math, with hints from Mark Goodliffe and Simon Anthony of Cracking The Cryptic. Presented by Cracking The Cryptic, YouTube's most popular Sudoku channel, this game brings brain-teasing challenge to your browser.

This Chrome extension offers 100 handcrafted levels across multiple themes, and, as part of the August update, adds 10 new puzzles. Each puzzle includes its own hints to help you if you get stuck, making it accessible to both seasoned Sudoku players and math-minded newcomers.

User Reviews

Sandwich Sudoku is praised for handcrafted, logically challenging puzzles and a rich toolset with multiple note styles and colors. Players value the deep solving experience, clear controls, and hints that progress in a learning-friendly way. However, reviewers repeatedly cite a steep learning curve from an inscrutable UI with unlabeled buttons, plus hints that can be cryptic. Other frequent drawbacks include battery drain and performance issues, landscape/orientation limitations on iPad, and the lack of cross-device progress syncing. Some players also wish for more puzzles beyond the fixed set. Overall, strong puzzle design but uneven UX and tech polish.
Pros
  • Handcrafted, well-designed puzzles that range from easy to very challenging.
  • Extensive toolset for notes and markings (colors, corner/center marks, Xs) and multi-cell entry.
  • Clear, intuitive controls and interface that are easy to use once you learn them.
  • Challenging yet replayable puzzles that encourage learning and applying new strategies.
  • Hints that follow a natural progression to guide solving.
Cons
  • Hints can be cryptic or inadequately explained, making it hard to learn from solutions.
  • The UI can feel inscrutable with unlabeled buttons and non-intuitive controls.
  • Progress cannot be synced across devices, so you can’t continue where you left off.
  • App can drain battery and exhibit performance issues on some devices.
  • Landscape mode and iPad orientation/display issues lead to awkward UI scaling.

I’m spending way too much time on these, but having a blast! I wish the corner and center pencil marks were separate like they are on classic sudoku app. In this app, if you change one, the other changes too. Might as well not pretend they have different functions.

There’s a fixed list of puzzles that don’t seem to be in any particular order, so there’s no way to set up a difficulty or do new puzzles. The interface is completely inscrutable; just a bunch of unlabeled buttons with meaningless symbols. This is clearly a quickly hacked together Unity project meant to make a quick buck.

The mechanics of this app are beyond fantastic. The puzzles range from rudimentary to challenging. The array of settings provided are plentiful to accommodate any sudoku solver’s needs. I hope they some day create a sequel to the Sandwich Sudoku app!!! I tried the chess sudoku and was let down in comparison. I find this style more rooted in deduction based reasoning and critical thinking when comparing the two.
