User Reviews

Opal reduces screen time and improves focus with helpful reports and scheduling, but it suffers from stability and reliability issues, especially with blocking and time tracking. Pricing and refund concerns are common, and some users feel they can bypass protections. Overall, it shows strong productivity benefits when it runs smoothly.
Pros
  • Helps reduce screen time and boost productivity.
  • Provides helpful reports and insights that show progress (days saved).
  • Flexible scheduling for wake/sleep times and study blocks with focus categories.
  • Motivational features like reminders and quotes that keep you on task.
  • Many useful features are available without a premium plan.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and stability issues, including startup crashes after updates.
  • Unreliable blocking and time tracking with false limits and weekend cap problems.
  • High price for the pro tier and frustration with free trial charges and refunds.
  • Ability to bypass restrictions or override blocks, reducing effectiveness.

I LOVED Opal for years, I’ve recommended it to clients and friends alike. But the new interface removed what I loved about Opal (the different blocking level, the adaptability within a simple design). It’s now over complicated, very glitchy (my app is constantly freezing) and doesn’t even block effectively anymore. Truly disappointed by these updates 😔

Before today, this app worked so good especially the free version where you had to go into the app if you wanted to unblock something. Now when I do the time limit and the time is up, the unblock button is on the app and is now easier to doomscroll and not the version that I liked is only available to people with subscriptions. If this continues, I’ll have no choice but to choose another app. What was once good is now pay to win.

This app was such a masterpiece and I loved having it block distractions every day however they ruined it in a matter of seconds with one upgrade. This upgrade does not show daily screen time as soon as you open it - it also makes it much easier to unblock apps when I had the “make it harder” option on. Hate what it just became and will be trying a different one now
