Film Negatives Photo Scanner

Features & Capabilities

FilmBox is an AI-powered negative film scanner by Photomyne for Chrome. It automatically inverts colors and enhances scans of film negatives, revealing memories quickly. Capture is simple: open a backlight, hold the film strip vertically, and long-press the capture button or say “Go” if voice control is enabled. The app processes the image to deliver the best possible scans.

Free captures are available to get you started, with an optional paid plan for unlimited scans, unlimited saving and sharing, and cloud backup across devices. Subscriptions can be monthly/yearly auto-renewing or a One-Time plan valid for 2 years. Details about payments, auto-renewal, and privacy are provided in-app (privacy policy and terms of use).

User Reviews

The app is easy to use and offers nostalgic value by recovering old negatives. However, users repeatedly report billing issues after trials, high pricing/paywalls, and unreliable scans plagued by reflections and backlighting. Auto-cropping cannot be disabled, causing wasted scans, and support is often slow. Overall, it’s tempting to try but risky financially and practically for quality scanning.
Pros
  • Easy to use and quick to start scanning.
  • Helps recover/view old negatives and memories.
  • Fun/nostalgic experience seeing old photos.
Cons
  • Free trial leads to unexpected charges; hard to cancel.
  • Poor scan quality with reflections/backlighting and inconsistent results.
  • Auto-cropping is not disable-able, leading to wasted scans.
  • Expensive pricing and post-trial paywalls.
  • Customer support is slow or unhelpful.

It’s a very simple app, but it costs a lot to scan negatives. Hated the interface and the way photos are edited after scanning. Will not use.

I have a very solid, locked down camera support and quality Kodak light box. I can shoot the same negative seconds apart, one exposure comes out nice and smooth & sharp, my very next exposure will come out grainy and contrasty.
