Features & Capabilities

Video Tachometer is a Chrome extension that uses slow-motion video to measure rotational speed by syncing the frame rate with a rotating part, creating a strobe-like freeze when they match. The Hz value is more precise than RPM, and supported ranges are 0.5–240 Hz (30–14400 RPM) for iPhones from 6 onward and 0.5–120 Hz (30–7200 RPM) for iPhone 5S. It helps you understand Hz vs RPM and how frame rate relates to speed.

It supports on-screen overlays showing frame rate, exposure duration, ISO, timestamps, and frame sequence numbers; you can customize the text color or disable overlays. You can record video with the overlay, capture annotated screenshots, and choose formats to balance quality and maximum frame rate. Hints assist observing rotation direction and speed changes, and the tool functions like a stroboscopic tachometer for quick RPM measurement from video.

User Reviews

Users praise Video Tachometer as a practical, accurate RPM tool, especially in its free version with substantial controls and broad applicability. The upgrade is inexpensive and widely valued. Common drawbacks center on aggressive feature gating and upgrade prompts, plus missing video capture functionality and occasional difficulty measuring very low RPM without upgrading. Overall, it’s a handy, portable tool with solid support, but potential buyers should expect upsells and to work around the missing video feature.
Pros
  • Free version is functional with robust controls and accuracy.
  • Accurate readings across a diverse set of applications (boats, engines, lawnmowers, airplanes, etc.).
  • Very affordable upgrade and excellent value for money compared to standalone tachometers.
  • Easy to use with thoughtful design and manual controls (exposure, ISO, focus, RPM) even in the free version.
  • Good support and responsive updates from the developer.
Cons
  • Gating of features behind the paid version and frequent upgrade prompts; some users feel misled or charged.
  • Lack of video capture functionality; users want to record results or video output.
  • Difficulty measuring very low RPM (sub-200 RPM) in the free mode and some precision limitations without upgrading.

I don't own a lot of tools (being a college student), so when I wanted to measure the RPM of my Lego motor to determine its torque, I was stuck. Looking on the AppStore was a last, desperate measure, but man, I'm glad I did. The free version of the app work beautifully and offers great control and features. And, the +-10RPM is not a huge deal. Overall, would absolutely recommend. Many thanks to the developer for providing this tool for free!
