Features & Capabilities

Paddle Paddle is a tracking app for paddle boards, kayaks, canoes, and similar watercraft. It maps rides, records maximum and average speed, paddling pace, pauses, and weather, and lets you set a target on the map with a long tap. Rides are stored in History with a color-coded path showing speed variance (green = faster, red = slower).

It can read heart rate from Bluetooth sensors, export infographics for sharing, export TCX files, and integrate with Strava. Foreground tracking or lock-mode keeps the ride active, with iCloud sync and Apple Watch support. HealthKit integration provides weight, age, calories, and workout activity reporting, and rides sync to iPhone when available.

User Reviews

Users praise Paddle Paddle for solid core tracking of paddling sessions and easy progress logging, along with a generally motivating experience. However, recurring drawbacks center on Apple Watch compatibility (control limitations and battery impact) and gated history access (potential Pro upgrade). Some readers also note brightness-related readability and color-indicator quirks, but these are less dominant. Overall, the app is valued for tracking and planning, with watch integration and history access being the main pain points.
Pros
  • Reliable core tracking of paddling sessions (time, distance, and routes/miles).
  • Easy logging of miles and tracking progress over time.
  • Positive user sentiment and motivation to paddle thanks to the app.
Cons
  • Apple Watch integration issues: difficulty starting/pausing on the watch, battery drain, and data not reliably collected on the watch.
  • History data visibility and access can be limited (some reviews mention Pro-only history or delayed visibility).

I paddle multiple times a week and love to use this app to record my routes, time myself and even transfer route data to Relive if I am taking photos. Only issue I have is the interface with my Apple Watch - it uses a lot of battery and I cannot start, pause or turn off the Paddle Paddle recording on it (can only do on the phone app).

So I downloaded this app specifically so I could log my paddling sessions by pressing a button on my watch—as I do on every other fitness tracker I use. I have NEVER been able to do so. My phone is usually in a waterproof dry bag and not easily accessible when I’m kayaking. My Apple Watch Ultra Paddle Paddle app shows access to two screens: one with time and km (I specified I want miles in iPhone settings). The next screen shows —speed km/hr, —average km/hr and —❤️ rate with no data being collected in any of these categories. So I have to scroll away to collect data in my Apple workouts app. This is useless! I guess I would have to upgrade to pro to get any useful data. But I question whether even that would let me start on my watch.
