Features & Capabilities

Easily prototype and produce AR experiences directly in AR with no prior 3D experience. Drag and drop to place and rotate virtual objects to assemble your scene directly in AR or on the canvas. Import your own .usdz files or leverage Reality Composer's built-in AR content library to get started quickly. Create high-quality 3D models using photogrammetry and guided capture with LiDAR on supported devices.

Add animations to move and scale objects, apply effects like wiggle or spin, and include spatial audio that can trigger on taps or proximity. Sync projects between iOS and Mac with the Reality Composer app bundled with Xcode, export scenes as .usdz for AR Quick Look or Xcode integration, and record sensor data in the real location to iterate later in Xcode.

User Reviews

Reality Composer shows strong AR/3D capture potential and appeals to AR enthusiasts, especially with Apple hardware and occlusion support. However, recurring issues overshadow the benefits: frequent crashes during capture, accessibility problems on non-Pro devices, and incomplete export options. Users also report confusing controls and occasional freezes that lose work. The app works well when it does, enabling quick 3D models and fun experimentation, but stability and cross‑platform/export limitations are the primary concerns. Improvements in reliability, clearer device support, and expanded export options would enhance the experience.
Pros
  • Solid AR and 3D capture capabilities that produce usable models when the feature functions.
  • Broad appeal to AR enthusiasts and hobbyists who enjoy experimenting with 3D objects.
  • Good Apple ecosystem integration and headset compatibility, with occlusion praised.
  • Positive experiences creating 3D models and prototyping in AR.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and stability issues during object capture and scanning.
  • 3D capture accessibility is inconsistent or device-limited (some devices can't access it or are not supported).
  • Export/format problems: USDZ export not working or only saving as reality file.
  • UI/UX challenges: confusing controls, awkward zoom/units, and getting stuck during interaction.
  • Freezes or hangs that cause loss of data and unsaved results.

App crashes as soon as I try to use it on iPhone 17 pro. Haven’t been able to get 1 scan done. Get 50% of the way though and it locks up. Sometimes give an error.

Seems to have stopped working. First I get “The operation couldn't be completed. (_RealityK-it_SwiftUl.ObjectCaptureSes- sion.Error error 3.) Try again later” and if I try to scan after that, it just crashes.
