Carnets - Jupyter is a standalone Jupyter notebook app for iPad and iPhone. It runs entirely locally with an embedded Python interpreter, so you can write and run Python code, view results, and narrate with Markdown — all without internet access. You can switch between Jupyter notebooks and JupyterLab from Settings.

The app ships with a broad set of packages (numpy, sympy, matplotlib, pandas, lxml, and more) and supports adding pure-Python packages via %pip install. You can share notebooks with other apps and open notebooks or folders managed by other apps. For a SciPy-lean setup, you can use our companion app Carnets - Jupyter (with scipy) if needed.

Carnets offers a cost-free, desktop-like Jupyter experience on iPad that’s great for learning Python and coding on the go. However, reliability issues (kernel errors after OS updates, instability with multiple files), device overheating, file access bugs, and missing package management significantly impact daily use. It remains a strong, valuable tool for students and on-the-go coding if you can tolerate these drawbacks and workarounds.

Life saver for students who need to code on the go and can’t access a computer.

Cons

Kernel startup errors and 'module object is not callable' issues after iPadOS updates, causing notebooks to fail to run.
Significant CPU usage leading to device overheating during use.
Stability and reliability problems (bugs, duplicating lines, and the need to reinstall after developing several files).
iCloud/file access problems (permissions, redirects to iCloud Drive, and inability to create or upload notebooks).
Missing package management features (no PyTorch support and inability to install packages via pip).

Recent reviews

The app shows up as a blank screen and crashes when you try to open files. It should be de-listed for macOS until it can get fixed. (Do try it on iPad though, it’s better there.)
