Features & Capabilities

mScopePal is a camera app specialized for microscopic shooting. (This is not an application that turns your iPhone into a microscope. Run mScopePal on iPhone or iPod touch which is attached to a microscope using an available adapter etc.) Easy adjustment of color (white balance) and brightness (exposure). Zooming supported. The manual focus function does not disturb the focus of the microscope.

User Reviews

Top strengths are manual focus and exposure controls for precise imaging, and strong microscope-compatibility via an adapter for afocal imaging. When used with the proper hardware, images can be clearer and easier to focus. However, several reviews note blur and usability issues without the right setup, and a portion report the app as unreliable or non-functional. Overall, it’s valued for control and microscope integration but highly dependent on correct hardware.
Pros
  • Manual focus control and adjustable exposure/white balance for precise imaging (better control than the stock camera).
  • Supports afocal imaging through a microscope eyepiece when used with an adapter.
  • Clearer, more stable images and easier focusing when used with the microscope setup (vs. using the phone camera alone).
  • Easy to use.
Cons
  • Images frequently appear blurry or out of focus, especially without proper microscope hardware or setup.
  • The app can be unreliable or not work for some users (reports of it not functioning).
  • Requires appropriate hardware (adapter/microscope kit) to achieve usable results; without it, image quality suffers.

The built-in camera app on my phone kept auto focusing, so I downloaded this app and now the image stays constant. I’m using the Swift SS121 microscope kit, which came with a phone adapter to slide over the monocular eyepiece. Some reviews say the image is blurry. And yes, when using this app without the compound microscope, the image is blurry. But with the microscope, the images are clear. Plus, there are fine tune light settings which are handy.
