User Reviews

Users praise the Assimil content and learning approach, noting the material and method align with the books and can be effective. However, the iOS app is plagued by stability issues (crashes, lag, unsaved progress), access/purchase problems and poor cross-device syncing, and a confusing UI. Some updates worsen language settings or raise security warnings. While improvements over older versions are noted, overall reliability and UX need substantial work for the app to be a dependable learning companion.
Pros
  • Assimil content mirrors the book/recordings and is effective for language learning.
  • The learning method is praised for its effectiveness and distinct approach compared with gamified apps (not Duolingo).
  • Mobile access on iPhone/iPad is convenient and viewed as an improvement over the older Mantano app.
Cons
  • Stability and performance problems, including crashes, laggy typing exercises, and progress not saving across sessions or devices.
  • Access and purchasing issues, such as difficulty logging in, downloading purchased courses, and inconsistent or slow support for issues.
  • Poor UI/UX and confusing navigation with non-intuitive icons and a lack of in-app documentation.
  • Updates sometimes disrupt language settings or trigger security warnings (e.g., invalid certificates).

Definitely a much improved app now. There are still many improvements to come I hope, but as of today, the course is worth the money.

I bought an Assimil course in the old Mantano app via an in-app purchase in 2020. What I had to do to access it in this new app was register as a new user in the new app. Once I set up a new password I could see my previous purchase. I could also use the new password to access the course in the Android app. The old app is still on my iPad, but apparently it only works if you logged in and downloaded your course while the old app was still supported. It still works on my old iPad. The old app was automatically installed when I set up my new iPad, but it gives me an error message when I try to log in. The new app is supposedly much improved, in any case.

I use this app on both my iPhone and iPad, everything is definitely an improvement than when I first tried it about a year ago. Even though I own the book I decided to get the course on app since sometimes it’s just easier to use apps. The content/course is the same Assimil from the books. I have no complaints with the app or course so far.
