User Reviews

Babbel is praised for structured, grammar-focused lessons and engaging AI practice, plus helpful visuals. Many users feel it’s a solid or even favorite app and report noticeable progress in languages like Brazilian Portuguese. However, recurring concerns include insufficient pronunciation feedback and lack of speed control, difficulty remembering and reviewing new vocabulary, and pacing that pushes learners ahead before mastery. Additional complaints touch on paywalls, trial setup, and subscription management, plus occasional performance/UX snags. Overall, Babbel can be effective for structured content but may require extra effort for pronunciation and vocabulary retention.
Pros
  • Structured, classroom-like grammar-focused lessons that help you build language skills.
  • AI-driven practice that feels like real conversation beyond textbook learning.
  • Visual aids and pictures to support comprehension and memory.
  • Overall positive sentiment with users reporting progress and calling Babbel a favorite app.
Cons
  • Lack of pronunciation feedback and no global speed control; speakers can be too fast.
  • Vocabulary retention is weak: new words aren’t consistently reviewed or revisited.
  • Pacing issues: the app can push you ahead before you’ve mastered earlier material, with limited spiraled review.
  • Subscription/paywall friction: trials require an account, cancellation is hard, and pricing can be a barrier.

Love this app. I enjoy the structure. Learning the in and outs with time. they do push an LGBTQ agenda on some things so I won’t use it for my kids to learn unfortunately. So I will find alternative apps for them to learn. They do a good job on tech and data. I also like the many ways to learn. I appreciate the effort they do to create ways of redo and retake material. That was not obvious to me at first.
