User Reviews

Sprite Pencil is easy and affordable, suitable for beginners and casual pixel art work. Users praise its simplicity and value, and it works well when features function. However, repeated concerns about crashes, unreliable import/export, missing undo, no animation tools, and limited zoom/navigation wear down the experience. Improving stability and adding core features (undo, animation, robust import/export, zoom) would bring it to a more mature, reliable editor.
Pros
  • Easy to use with a simple, approachable interface.
  • Suitable for both beginners and experienced pixel artists; versatile tool for sprite art.
  • Great for creating simple sprites for coding games.
  • Well worth the money; good value for a basic pixel art editor.
Cons
  • No undo feature (no way to revert actions; request for keyboard/action mapping).
  • Stability issues and crashes (crashes on launch, during export, or when searching).
  • Import/export problems (import button sometimes fails; export can crash; issues exporting transparent sprites).
  • Lack of animation tools (no animation workflow currently; repeated requests).
  • Zoom/navigation limitations and related usability problems (poor Zoom support; scrolling can delete off-screen content).

Table stakes for an image editor is undo. Must be able to map it to a keystroke or action. The tool looks interesting otherwise, would love to revise this review if the product meets the minimum bar.

10 out of 10 except for one thing. I’m trying to upload one of my sprites in the import tab but when I click the button it doesn’t do anything. I still love this app and it’s great for making simple sprites for coding games or animations

Seems pretty good, but is there a way I could animate with it?
