User Reviews

Users like the game’s fun, cute presentation and its effectiveness for memorizing kana, aided by a fast-paced, repeat-driven approach. However, recurring criticisms focus on heavy monetization and energy gating, progression grind, inconsistent audio quality, and pacing that can feel more like a grind than a learning tool. The app works well for beginners but needs improvements in content balance and audio to reach broader appeal.
Pros
  • Fun, cute design that makes learning Japanese enjoyable and approachable for beginners.
  • Effective for memorizing Hiragana and Katakana (and beginner Kanji) through repetition.
  • Timed gameplay promotes quick recall and automatic recognition.
  • Accessible design and features that encourage continued learning; many users would recommend it to beginners.
Cons
  • Monetization and energy mechanics restrict progression and can feel pay-to-win.
  • Progression is gated behind in-game currency or grinding, delaying access to more content.
  • Audio/sound quality issues (some sounds mispronounced or not working) detract from the experience.
  • Pacing/design imbalances (very short timers, pre-game study heavy) reduce fun and flow for some learners.

It’s a solidly okay take on teaching Japanese, and may be good for beginners. But the English of Lancelot isn’t great, and the sounds of the words are often obscured by other parts of the game when you get the right answer. Also, the screen of the game was too big for my phone screen and j couldn’t see how much money I had.
