User Reviews

Users praise The Castles of Burgundy as a faithful, well-implemented digital port of the beloved board game, with solid AI and appeal for fans who want to play on the go. However, many reviews highlight significant downsides: frequent crashes and stability problems; slow, heavy animations that many want to skip; a challenging learning curve and confusing UI; online play hampered by a small player pool and 24-hour turn limits; and DLC/expansion issues that disrupt games or push purchases. Overall, a strong concept hampered by technical and usability issues.
Pros
  • Faithful adaptation of the Castles of Burgundy board game, capturing its mechanics and feel.
  • Solid AI opponents that provide a meaningful and enjoyable challenge.
  • Digitized, portable version that lets you play on the go without handling physical components.
  • Strong appeal for fans of the game, offering a familiar experience on a mobile platform.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and stability problems across updates and devices.
  • Long, heavy animations and replays; players want the option to disable them to speed up gameplay.
  • Steep learning curve with a confusing in-app tutorial/UI; rules and flow aren’t immediately clear.
  • Online play is hampered by a small player base, long 24-hour turns, and a lack of instant games.
  • DLC/expansion issues: DLC maps can be forced or randomly assigned, causing disruption and frustration, with some bugs related to expansions.

I enjoy this game. It is very similar to the board game.

There are too few people and I can't form a team to start the game. I want a refund.

I bought this, because I own Feldmans other analog board game, Carpe Diem (Ravensburger). That game isn’t as well known and probably will never become an app, even though it is awesome. Castles of Bergundy shares similar mechanics, and is considered one of the best board games ever made on BGG. I had never played that board game but wanted to play a game like Carpe Diem on the go. This gives me my fix! My only complaint is the weird, PowerPoint swoosh that occurs between each player’s turn. I don’t know why, but it looks corny to me and kind of ruins the vibe of the game. Board games don’t have magic portals. Perhaps a fade out and in would work better. But overall, I love this game. Difficult to do well in. I appreciate that. High recommend. 👍
