Features & Capabilities

Dual N-back is a science-backed memory workout. Each session features 40 turns on a 3x3 grid where a square lights up and a letter is spoken. You must remember both the letter and the square, and indicate when either matches what you saw or heard N turns ago. Increasing N gradually challenges your working memory.

Key features include progress tracking, automatic level adjustment, dark mode support on iOS 13, adjustable game duration and response delay, landscape play, customizable sounds, data export, and email-based account linking.

User Reviews

Dual N-back is praised for its focused, configurable implementation and memory-training potential, with an ad-free experience. However, frequent complaints center on paywalls and leveling limits, misleading free-tier access to higher levels, a large stop button causing accidental exits, unreliable input/score reporting, and weak, poorly presented stats. Support responsiveness is also a concern. These issues dampen the otherwise solid core design.
Pros
  • Simple, focused, and faithful to the Dual N-back game with a clean design.
  • Useful for training memory and mental processing speed.
  • Highly configurable and customizable settings.
  • Ad-free experience (no ads).
  • Strong core concept and solid execution.
Cons
  • Subscription-based model that blocks higher levels and progress (paywall).
  • Free tier misleads about access to level 3; level 3 is not accessible without subscribing.
  • Start/stop button is large and easy to hit accidentally, interrupting attempts.
  • Input/score reporting can be unreliable, with clicks not registered or misreported.
  • Stats and progress tracking are limited or not clearly presented (per-N data and weighting are missing), and support responsiveness is questioned.
Recent reviews
First of all, N-Back wasn’t created by this app and its developers, it was made by some scientists who were trying to measure short-term memory an attention. Second, this team proved that the N-Back test can improve short-term memory and focus through repeated tests. Third and finally, while this app is free, it only goes up to the second level, limiting how far you can improve.

It said that I reached level 3 (the max on the free tier) even though I never played it lol

Love the game, but every-time I accidentally slightly miss a button, it stops the game. Very frustrating. Also the user statistics is just not really helpful at all
