User Reviews

Users praise Tsurukame for its fast, mobile-friendly experience and useful Anki mode, plus strong offline/notification support. However, multiple reviews mention bugs (UI flicker, token errors, progress loss) and audio issues, along with several desired features (undo, interleaving, widgets, fonts). Overall, a powerful WK companion on iOS hampered by stability and feature-gap concerns.
Pros
  • Fast, responsive mobile experience that feels polished and efficient.
  • Anki mode enables quick, time-saving review sessions.
  • Mobile access with notifications and offline capabilities improves WK usability away from a desktop.
  • Native iPhone app with a clean, user-friendly design and layout.
  • Offers more features and scripts than the web WK site, reducing the need for browser workarounds.
Cons
  • UI glitches, notably purple background flickering during vocab reviews in dark mode.
  • API token errors can render the app unusable for some users.
  • Occasional data/progress loss bugs (progress disappearing).
  • Pronunciation/audio mismatches for certain items (e.g., wrong sound playback).
  • Notable feature gaps (undo button, interleaving/lesson ordering, widgets, and font options) that users frequently request.

I loved the old Wanikani app, so when they discontinued it and went to a third-party developer that makes Tsurukume, I switched over to it. It was fine until I needed a break and turned on vacation mode. This is supposed to pause everything and stop having new lessons and reviews pile up while you’re taking a break from the app. Instead, I came back to find 280 lessons and 1721 reviews that I had to deal with. On the Wanikani website, it showed 5 lessons and 120 reviews. I guess I will have to use the website instead. Do not download this app until they make it work properly

I like anki mode and back to back reviews, both of which require scripts that are constantly at risk of breaking on the main site. Frankly if I had to manually type 100 reviews a day, I’d quit. Don’t have the time or patience for that. Two small nitpicks I have though, is I wish you could hide the accuracy percentage during reviews, and disable the review summary once done. Both are distracting and make bad days feel worse by emphasizing my failures. I don’t know if the dev even reads these, but these two small features would make the app perfect for me. Thanks for the hard work.
