User Reviews

Users praise Learn Japanese Kanji: Benkyō for its breadth of kanji with kana, stroke order, and handwriting practice, plus a free, ad-free experience and JLPT-ordered content. The interface is clean and quizzes are engaging. However, recurring issues include laggy performance, crashes and unsaved progress, occasional quiz data errors, and missing cross-device sync and other features like sharing lists and a guided curriculum.
Pros
  • Free to use with lots of resources and no ads in the free version
  • Comprehensive kanji learning with stroke orders and handwriting recognition
  • JLPT-ordered kanji with pronunciations and example words/phrases
  • Clean, easy-to-use interface with effective flashcard quizzes
  • Widget available for quick review
Cons
  • Slow, laggy UI and performance issues; the app can feel sluggish
  • Crashes during writing practice and failures to save progress or keep lists
  • Content accuracy issues in quizzes (some kanji/meanings are incorrect)
  • No reliable cross-device sync; progress and lists do not sync across devices
  • Curriculum organization/mapping is lacking and onboarding can be confusing; missing features like sharing lists

The main issues with this app that I have noticed after using it for 3 years are the following two things: 1. Spelling errors. English and Japanese spelling errors occur in JLPT vocabulary flashcards as well as the Essentials lesson flashcards. I would say that about 1 in 75 flashcards have an error. These have all existed for years and are still here which is very disappointing. For people who don’t know better, these dozens of errors may become ingrained into their knowledge and could take them a long time to weed out. 2. Discrepancies in definitions between flashcards/lack of consolidation. This issue is everywhere in the vocab flashcards. For example(and i could give 100+ examples), if you type the present tense conjugation of the japanese verb 出す(dasu), 出します(dashimasu), into the search bar, 4 individual flashcards will pop up for that verb, but all 4 have different definitions which are: 1. Send. 2. Take out/withdraw. 3. Hand in. 4. Run. If you get a japanese to english question for one of these flashcards, you wont know which of the 4 english definitions to type, so you get the question wrong unless you are lucky or you already know all 4 definitions. This needs to be simplified or streamlined or consolidated in some way, or else it makes learning a lot harder. Other than these two significant issues that hold it back a lot, the app is great.

Great for learning kanji, only problem with the app is that you can’t mass add kanji to a list, you have to go and individually select
