Overview

Features & Capabilities

Active Experience is a single app for all events, enabling you to track participants on a course map, view real-time leaderboards, receive progress alerts, and share results with spectators and participants. It also lets you follow nearby events like marathons, 5Ks, 10Ks, and triathlons with GPS tracking and notification controls.

The Watch app uses HealthKit to collect heart rate and exercise data, saving workouts to HealthKit when finished. Note that continued GPS use in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

User Reviews

Overall, Active Experience is designed to let spectators track runners during races and can handle multiple trackers, but users report poor real‑world reliability. The core feature often fails to update, is inaccurate, or misses checkpoints, and some users see crashes, lag, and heavy battery use during events. Setup is confusing and inconsistent, with requests for complex account steps or workarounds like Find My Friends. Performance is especially problematic at large events such as the LA Marathon, with outdated data in some cases. Many reviewers suggest alternative tracking methods while acknowledging the idea's value.
Pros
  • Core feature is tracking runners for spectators during races.
  • Can track multiple runners (e.g., tracking several participants).
  • Initial tracking can work at the start of a race for some users.
Cons
  • Runners' location tracking is unreliable or non-functional, with updates missing, positions inaccurate, and checkpoint data often unavailable.
  • App crashes or becomes unresponsive during races, and heavy battery/data usage worsens the experience.
  • Setup and permissions are confusing and inconsistent, often requiring an Active account or workarounds like Find My Friends.
  • Data is inconsistent or outdated across events (notably LA Marathon) and may not reflect actual progress.
  • Users are advised to use alternative tracking methods (e.g., AirTags) due to unreliability.

Absolute disaster of an app. A pox on every marathon that uses this app to track family and friends in a race.

Downloaded this app to support my runner. The app did not track my runner. It shows that she hasn’t started the race over an hour after the start of the race. Without the tracking ability for my runner, it’s just a social media app for photos. Long story short, it doesn’t allow you to track the runner which is the only reason I downloaded the app
