Features & Capabilities

Note Flash is a piano sight-reading trainer that listens to your playing via microphone or a MIDI instrument to verify correct notes and octaves. It uniquely includes accidentals and ledger lines, and it visualizes your progress with graphs so you can see which notes you recognize fastest or where you struggle.

Features include themes you can customize (including using your own image), a distraction-free, ad‑free experience, and offline operation with on‑device microphone data staying private. For best results, connect a MIDI keyboard; you can also use the microphone and adjust sensitivity. The app supports per-note progress, hand-specific practice options, hints, and fully supports progress tracking on staff and notes.

User Reviews

Note Flash Music Sight Reading is valued for MIDI support, real-keyboard input, a broad, customizable note range, and perceived upgrade features. However, users repeatedly report unreliable note detection, high battery usage, gatekeeping essential features behind paywalls, annoying rating prompts, and the lack of tempo-control options.
Pros
  • MIDI compatibility and the ability to use a real keyboard (and iPad mic) for input
  • Wide range of notes with the option to customize which notes you practice
  • Potential speed improvements in sight-reading after practicing with the app
  • Upgrade adds useful features like sensitivity control and sharps/flats (perceived value)
Cons
  • Unreliable note detection: the app sometimes misreads or fails to register played notes
  • High battery drain and device heating during use
  • Feature access is gated behind paid upgrades (e.g., left-hand/bass clef) making the free version limited
  • Frequent prompts to rate the app (nagging review prompts)
  • No tempo control: users cannot slow down or adjust tempo during practice

The images are warped because they’re not sized properly for the screen. I don’t wanna see fake parchment. There is no progressive difficulty.

Pay the $7.99. This is by far the best sight reading app I have found. I’ve tries others and this one works with my keyboard and the microphone on my iPad. With the upgrade, you can tweak the sensitivity and it’s perfect. Also, the upgrade gives sharps and flats. In just the first week of using this, I have seen my speed go up considerably. And because I can respond using the keyboard (four octaves) it’s so much better than flash cards or similar apps that don’t equate to the actual location of the keys on the keyboard.
