Features & Capabilities

NoteBrainer is a simple, engaging tool to learn sight reading by playing short flash-card drills. It supports treble and bass clefs, covers all key signatures, and offers a variety of instrument sounds to train both ear and eye.

Configure drills by time and difficulty, use sound-only mode, and track progress with play history. Features include key-signature highlighting, English and solfège notation (Do, Re, Mi...), assistant modes to guide learning, and external MIDI keyboard support. Best of all, it’s free and easy to use on Chrome, making it a handy practice tool for learners at home or in lessons.

User Reviews

NoteBrainer is praised as a free, simple, beginner-friendly tool that helps users recognize notes quickly and improve sight-reading, with many saying it’s effective and enjoyable to practice. However, reviewers frequently cite MIDI/sound issues with external keyboards, onboarding gaps, stability bugs on some devices, and a limited keyboard range that makes ledger notes hard to reach, plus occasional navigation glitches. Overall, great concept with solid learning value but notable feature gaps and reliability concerns on certain setups.
Pros
  • Improves note recognition and sight-reading quickly.
  • Free to use.
  • Simple, distraction-free interface that's beginner-friendly.
  • Effective practice tool for learning notes and building reading skills.
Cons
  • MIDI support is unreliable or nonfunctional when using external keyboards (sound may not play).
  • Onboarding is lacking; no guided training or introduction to how to read sheet music.
  • Stability issues and bugs on some devices (reported as buggy or crashing).
  • Keyboard range is limited; ledger notes and certain octaves are hard to reach.
  • Navigation issues (back button in history may not work; no easy way to quit).
