Features & Capabilities

Hey Camera is a simple way to capture photos and videos using your voice. You can use voice commands to take a photo, start or stop a video recording, reverse the camera, and enable or disable the flash. The voice commands are configurable in settings, so you can set your own phrases to perform the actions you want. The voice recognition works offline on iOS 13 and newer, and Siri Shortcuts are available for taking a photo or starting a video recording—Hey Camera is controllable with Siri!

In addition to voice control, the app functions as a traditional camera with an intuitive preview, easy capture, and quick sharing. It delivers a true hands-free experience for your photography while still offering manual controls when you prefer. Whether you use voice or touch, Hey Camera provides a reliable, flexible photography workflow.

User Reviews

Users consistently praise Hey Camera for its hands-free, voice-activated capture, especially for one-handed shooting and quick framing. The app is described as simple to use and highly responsive, with customizable voice commands. However, recurring issues across multiple reviews include stability problems (crashes/locks), inconsistent video save behavior (stopping and saving clips), and offline-saving limitations (no save without network). Some users also note a paywall after a short trial and limited Bluetooth/AirPods compatibility. Overall, it’s a strong productivity tool when functioning, but reliability and offline/save issues limit practicality.
Pros
  • Hands-free voice control for photos and videos works reliably and responds quickly.
  • Significantly aids one-handed shooting by enabling voice capture and easy framing.
  • Simple and easy-to-use design.
  • Customizable voice commands/trigger words.
Cons
  • Crashes or locks up soon after launch, making it intermittently non-functional.
  • Video can fail to stop or save correctly, resulting in incomplete clips.
  • No offline saving: media isn’t saved without an active network connection.
  • Free usage is capped; after a few shots you must pay for the unlimited version.
  • AirPods/Bluetooth control not supported, limiting hands-free workflow.

When your arms aren’t long enough, or nobody else is around to take the shot of just you, or you and friends, set your phone on something and walk back to where you were (no self timer to worry about) and tell Hey Camera to take the shot! And you can use whatever words or phrases you want for the commands. I like to say “Shoot” instead of “Take a picture,” for example. It’s one of my favorite apps.

App starts recording video immediately upon opening without even giving it a voice controlled instruction. Cannot switch verbally between video to camera....and won't react to voice commands.....essentially non functional.

There are many times when taking a shot I have to position the phone in such a way that I can not reach the shutter button. Hey Camera solves that problem very. I just say “Image” and the photo is taken and saved to my gallery. Great app! Thanks for the innovation
