User Reviews

FishLegal is praised for ease of use and helpful location features, up-to-date alerts, and offline MPAs, plus solid support and Pro value. However, users repeatedly note GPS/location reliability and UI issues, data accuracy and update delays, and mixed views on price. Overall, it’s a strong, convenient tool for staying legal while fishing, with room to improve data accuracy and UX.
Pros
  • Easy to use with helpful location features that show your position and help avoid no-fish zones.
  • Regular regulatory alerts and updates keep users informed.
  • Accurate, easily accessible boundary information for marine protected areas.
  • Offline MPA maps and searchable reserve data are useful when connectivity is limited.
  • Responsive customer support and value from the Pro subscription.
Cons
  • GPS positioning can be imprecise and the UI to view your location is not always intuitive.
  • Regulatory data can be outdated or inconsistent, with some updates delayed or missing and occasional factual errors.
  • Subscription pricing is perceived as expensive by some users.
  • Some reviews report gaps or inaccuracies in data coverage and updates.
Recent reviews
Extremely useful for quick identification and keeping up to date on legalities, as well as providing alerts and updates. Hoping they can add more species and photos in time.

I was counting on using this app to help with rockfish, identification and regulations. Unfortunately, the regulations are six years out of date, and have changed significantly! Fortunately, I had at least some familiarity with current regulations, and was able to avoid keeping illegal rockfish (listed as legal in this app) that could have resulted in a huge ticket. In addition, their listing/map of marine protected areas is incomplete; Cordell bank national Marine sanctuary is absent!

No one has time to futz with an app while fishing. This is easy to use, shows where you are. Good reference for no fish zones and showing your location helps keep you out of the No zone areas. Very helpful. Use it a lot.
