Features & Capabilities

Say Something SHP is an anonymous reporting system from Sandy Hook Promise that enables students, parents, and community members to submit secure, anonymous safety tips about potential threats. Tips are uploaded to a live 24/7 crisis center and managed until the case is resolved, supporting early identification and intervention to prevent violence, self-harm, bullying, and other harmful behaviors.

Designed for schools and local authorities, the extension supports administrators and law enforcement in creating effective interventions while preserving user privacy. It helps create safer learning environments through rapid response and ongoing case management.

User Reviews

Overall, reviews show a mixed view: the app can be a life-saving reporting channel with supportive staff, but it carries serious risks. Many users report that reports trigger police or sheriff involvement, sometimes inappropriately or due to misreports, and several say it does not lead to help or resolution. Privacy concerns about anonymity are raised, and usability issues (slow, confusing UI) frustrate users. While some praise it as a last-resort tool for crisis and bullying, most reviews caution that it should not replace talking to trusted adults or counselors.
Pros
  • Provides a reporting channel that can trigger intervention from authorities or school staff in serious situations.
  • Supportive messages and guidance from app staff during crises.
  • Can serve as a last-resort option when talking to adults or counselors isn't possible.
  • Some users report it helped prevent self-harm in friends.
Cons
  • Not anonymous; concerns about privacy and potential exposure.
  • Can trigger police involvement or harm through misreports or swatting.
  • Often not effective or not taken seriously by schools.
  • Poor UI/UX: slow, confusing, and hard to use.

My school district has been promoting this app for a long time, so when I heard my friend talking about doing things to herself I decided to leave a tip. The next day my friends told me how the police was called and that her parents were almost arrested. I was hoping they would get the school counsellor to talk to her but instead they immediately went to authorities. If I wanted the police to get involved I would have told them, therefore I suggest instead of getting this app you should talk to a teacher or counsellor.
