Features & Capabilities

The MMOPA Flight Risk Assessment Tool (FRAT) is a tool developed by the Malibu/Mirage Owners and Pilots Association to aid the PA46 pilot community in assessing flight risks unique to the PA46 (Malibu, Matrix Mirage/M350, JetPROP, Meridian/M500, and M600 aircraft).

The pilot fills out a questionnaire about their upcoming flight and the MMOPA FRAT provides a score and one of three possible ranges:

Green: Lower risk. The pilot/crew should still discuss what the highest scoring risks are and attempt to mitigate those risks.

Yellow: Caution. Try to mitigate some of the higher scoring items to reduce risk. If the score is still yellow, the FAA recommends the pilot bring in the opinion of a designated safety person (such as a CFI) to help think of ways to further mitigate risks or cancel the flight.

Red: No-go. Unless the risks can be mitigated, the flight is cancelled.

The FAA says this about FRAT’s:

When implementing a Safety Management System (SMS), one of the most critical components to develop is a Flight Risk Assessment Tool (FRAT). Because every flight has some level of risk, it is critical that pilots are able to differentiate, in advance, between a low risk flight and a high-risk flight, and then establish a review process and develop risk mitigation strategies. A Flight Risk Analysis Tool enables proactive hazard identification, is easy to use, and can visually depict risk. It is an invaluable tool in helping pilots make better go/no-go decisions and should be a part of every flight.

The Malibu/Mirage Owners & Pilots Association (MMOPA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the interests and safety of owners and pilots worldwide who fly PA-46 derivative (Malibu, Matrix Mirage/M350, JetPROP, Meridian/M500, and M600 aircraft). MMOPA was founded in 1988, and now serves over 900 members. Membership is available to any registered or prospective owner and/or operator of qualified aircraft or any qualifying individual or organization involved with or providing a service for the PA-46 family of aircraft. MMOPA is not affiliated with the New Piper aircraft company of any other manufacturer/vendor.

User Reviews

I use it for Cirrus S22T and find that this tool asks just the right questions. I wish the interface was slightly more up to date (looks obsolete on iPhone 15 Max Pro). I wish I could modify and/or add questions, and also export results as PDF for sharing.

Hello, I just purchased a iPhone 14 pro max and realized this app I had on my previous phone would try to open and just close, so I deleted the app and redownloaded and still acted the same. Maybe the app needs updated or something is wrong with my phone. I hated to write a review to communicate with you about the issue, once fixed, I can remove this review

This is a great application for flight risk assessment in high performance aircraft. The team that built the application looked at specific accident factors in its development. This app lets you quickly qualify the level of risk associated with a given flight. Effectively and objectively qualifying risk is a key component of managing it.
