Features & Capabilities

Solar Eclipse Timer has marked six total solar eclipses since 2017, earning trust in the eclipse-chasing community. It helps tens of thousands of observers enjoy the event by delivering spoken reminders and down-to-the-second countdowns for all eclipse phases. Photographers benefit from precise timing cues to optimize their captures.

Designed as a field tool, the app works offline after unlocking and does geolocation and contact-time calculations entirely within the device. It's free to try, with a $1.99 in-app purchase to unlock the 2026 eclipse. Features include an in-app video tutorial, audio tests, and a practice video synced to real-time announcements, Photographer Mode, manual coordinate entry, and a link to worksheets and a Master Stop Chart. It also offers partial eclipse timing, is ad-free, and does not track user data. Always wear eye protection.

User Reviews

Users largely praise Solar Eclipse Timer for precise, voice-guided timing and safety prompts that help observe totality and manage eyewear. Tutorials and educational value enhance the experience, and it’s useful for interval photography. However, many reviews cite reliability problems (GPS/timing drift, glitches), a bare UI with a steep learning curve, pricing confusion, and cross-year notification issues. When configured correctly, it’s a valuable eclipse companion, but performance is inconsistent for some users.
Pros
  • Precise, voice-guided timing down to the second for totality, with clear prompts on when to wear and remove eclipse glasses.
  • Helpful tutorials and onboarding that, when followed, greatly enhance the viewing experience.
  • Educational and engaging, turning the eclipse into a learning opportunity about phenomena like totality, shadow bands, and Bailey's beads.
  • Useful for photography timing, enabling interval shots and timing for capturing key moments.
  • Proven useful across multiple eclipses for many users when configured correctly.
Cons
  • Location and timing can be unreliable: GPS or manual location data often misplaces users or mis-times end of totality.
  • Clunky UI and a steep onboarding/learning curve; some users feel the app is barebones and hard to use.
  • Pricing and hidden paywall complaints; inconsistent pricing (advertised as $1.99 but charged more) and general concerns about cost.
  • Reliability issues during live events: glitches, app crashes, or prompts that don’t match reality.
  • Notifications can become outdated or misfire across years, leading to irrelevant alerts.

A little late, but… Simply put, this app single handily made my (and the fine folks in Detroit, TX) experience possible for the 2024 eclipse. I thank Dustin at “SmarterEveryday” for turning me on to this. Everyone around me thought I was some kind of genius/scientist as I was calling out the phases of the eclipse. I think the most important feature was telling everyone when when to dawn their glasses again (after the 4m 15s of totality). With that being said, I will be in Spain this summer. Will the app be updated to service it? To everyone else. If you’re passionate in science, willing to learn the app (it’s not hard), this app is great. I knew I was in safe hands once the ‘call outs’ started. With the potential 1m 40s I’m going to experience this year, I’d like to feel that safe again.

The UI is a bit barebones, but it gets the job done. The down-to-the second timing, when combined with custom limb correction, allowed me to capture Bailey’s beads at C2 and C3. 10/10 would use again.

If you take the time to familiarize yourself with the app before the event it enhances your enjoyment of an eclipse. It lets you know when it’s safe to remove protective eyewear and reminds you to observe your surroundings and the horizon. I would recommend turning off notifications after an event is over. I was in a slight panic today when my app started to give instructions. I realized the eclipse I purchased for last year must have had only the month and day in its programing so I assume it will be giving me instructions every April 8th. It did bring back welcome memories.
