Bullet Journal Companion

A companion for your notebook

Features & Capabilities

Bullet Journal Companion 2.0 is a dedicated companion app for the Bullet Journal system. It lets you quickly capture Tasks, Events, and Notes away from your notebook with The Log, organize and search notebooks in The Library, follow a guided How-To in The Guide, and cultivate reflection through The Reflection feature. It also offers curated Articles and Monthly Prompts to keep you inspired, designed by Ryder Carroll, the creator of Bullet Journal.

Version 2.5 enhances the experience with an improved menu and interface, a home screen with daily prompts and quotes, new widgets, expanded Learn content, tutorials in The Guide, along with ongoing bug fixes. Version 2.0 adds page photos, Backups to the Files app, restoration on new devices, viewing past reflections, redesigned reminders, faster performance, and new library views. Note: This app is NOT designed to replace your notebook—it is a companion FOR your notebook.

User Reviews

Users praise Bullet Journal Companion for its simple, on-the-go logging, digital backups, and a helpful onboarding experience. However, repeated stability problems (freezes/crashes/overheating), strict file/date limitations (no overlapping journals), a aggressive 72-hour expiry, readability issues, and a lack of ongoing updates heavily color the overall sentiment, with many calling it abandonware despite its useful ideas.
Pros
  • Quick add widget for fast entries on the Home Screen (on-the-go logging)
  • Digital backup/archive of bullet journals within the app
  • Simple, straightforward layout that focuses on task tracking
  • Backups and a sample BuJo included in newer versions (better onboarding)
  • Serves as a convenient digital companion to a paper BuJo, enabling quick capture when you don’t have your notebook
Cons
  • Frequent freezing/crashing and unresponsiveness (including overheating on some devices)
  • Inability to have overlapping journals or freely manage multiple journals with overlapping dates
  • 72-hour auto-delete/expiration of notes and logs (not always desirable and not clearly configurable)
  • Accessibility/readability issues due to font size and color/low contrast (difficult to read for many users)
  • Perceived lack of updates and slow/absent responses to user feedback, giving an impression of abandonware

Update March 2026 I thought I would try this app again and it continues to lock up when I select dates. I noticed the app hasn’t been updated in years. It feels like this is becoming abandonware at this point. I would recommend just scanning your journals with Apple preview app although you are limited to 24 pages at a time. Alternatively you can use Readdles Scanner Pro. Update July 2024 This app has now become unusable for me. If I try to add a journal to my library with previous dates it simply won’t work. I pick a starting date and it’s fine. When I go to pick an ending date it locks up when I try to scroll prior to 2022. I’ve completely deleted the app several times, restarting my phone but nothing works. At this point I would recommend using a good scanner app and just scan in your notebooks. The rest of the content in the app is already available for free on the BJ website. Extra features like on the go logging have an annoying 72 hour auto delete. I understand the goal was to get you to migrate to the journal but the time should be adjustable. I would love to go for a week vacation and not have to bring my journal and risk losing it. But the 72 hour limit means I can’t use this app daily to log my vacation. I recommend using Notes, Apples built in journal app or DayOne when a digital solution is needed. Original review I really want to give this app 5 stars but it has an absolutely fatal flaw for myself and I’m sure many others. You can have journals with overlapping dates. The reason this is critical is many of us can not mix our work and personal journals. So if you have to keep 2 journals that overlap the same date period you can’t back them up. If the app would simply add the ability to have multiple journal libraries it would solve this problem.

Works as intended. And love the reflect option includes log from the app. My only things that would make it better would be 1. The load page to be the log. That way it minimizes friction and immediately you can jot ideas 2. The widget to show if you marked an item as migrated or not. I wish it would either be removed from the widget or the “x” shown. Right now it keeps original symbol even after marking it as migrated. 3. Reflection page editable to add our own reflection routine before offering the photo option. That way people who are new to bujo can remember their end of day routines easier.
