User Reviews

HamAlert is strong in its core alerting capability, with reviews noting timely spot notifications and some tangible contest/spotting results. However, multiple reviews echo significant reliability and usability problems: difficult/troublesome trigger setup with freezes, overall stability issues (crashes, registration problems, iPad bugs), onboarding/UI friction (font size, website redirects), and data quality concerns (garbage-looking callsigns and a call for database cross-checks). Overall, powerful alerts are offset by core reliability and UX flaws that hinder consistent use.
Pros
  • Notifies when spots are detected, enabling timely alerts.
  • Alerts have led to successful spotting across regions/contests (and helped identify potential ATNOs).
Cons
  • Triggers setup is difficult and can freeze (e.g., when entering park references; only callsigns save).
  • Frequent stability issues: freezes/crashes and registration/login errors, including on iPad.
  • UI/UX and onboarding friction: small font, prompts to visit the website, and confusing onboarding flow.
  • Data quality concerns: some spots appear as garbage callsigns; desire for cross-check against QRZ database.
Recent reviews
Using it for new FT8 countries. So far every spot is a garbage callsign. It would be nice if the app checked against the QRZ database and indicated whether the call was found or not

If setting the triggers worked on other things besides call signs, it would be a great app. When I try and add a US park reference as a trigger, the screen will freeze with the only useable option being “Done” which saves nothing preventing you from ever being allowed to get alerts for any parks while using the iPhone. The only thing I can save are call signs and nothing else. I tried multiple times, at different orientations, but all of the entry fields will freeze after I enter a park number.
